JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A manatee was rescued from a 36-inch storm drain Wednesday afternoon after crews and first responders worked on the scene for several hours.

The manatee now is in the hands of SeaWorld workers.

The rescue became an internet sensation as thousands of people watched the event unfold online.

Reports say the manatee has suffered some scrapes to its nose, and had trouble turning around, according to NewsJax4.

The operation is near Davinci Avenue and Ortega Boulevard in the Ortega area of the city.

A city crew was doing work on pavement in the area earlier Wednesday when it spotted the manatee.

"It will take some time but we are optimistic. Working together I think we will get the animal out," said Nadia Gordon with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
