KUSA - 9NEWS Dietitian-Nutritionist Malena Perdomo teaches nutrition classes in the Denver area as well as at Metropolitan State University.

On Monday, she spoke about why protein-rich foods are important to have for breakfast.

Protein helps you stay fuller longer because protein has the effect of activating satiety hormones. Feeling fuller is important for weight loss and maintenance as well as keeping your energy up.

Studies are suggesting that consuming a moderate amount of protein throughout the day is better than waiting until dinner time.

Some simple breakfast ideas to incorporate protein into your diet are:

  • Lentils and quinoa
  • Lean meats and eggs
  • Smoked salmon
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Combine fiber with protein: Oat meal and Greek yogurt with some fruits and ground flaxseed
  • Cottage cheese with peaches
  • Easy smoothie with chia seeds and some whey protein or other protein powders.
