ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Come 2022, Florida customers with Duke Energy could see a bit more cash staying in their pockets.

The company says it is proposing measures to cut the impact of new rates taking effect in January 2022 by about 33 percent.

To do so, Duke Energy, in cooperation with customer groups, will spread approximately $247 million in unrecovered fuel costs over a span of two years.

According to a press release, the action would reduce projected increases to a homeowners bill (1,000-kWh) by approximately $4.67 per month.

“We’re always considering how to soften the impact on customer bills, so we’re pleased to propose this creative way to reduce the increase by 33%,” said Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida state president. “We want to deliver real value to our customers, including more control of their bills, a stronger, more reliable grid and cleaner energy.”

With the proposed reduction, customers will still need to deal with rising rates. On average, Duke Energy says customers will see an increase of $9.24 on their monthly bill.

Duke Energy adds that it is removing fees for residential homeowners who pay their bills by credit card beginning in 2022.
