Wrong place, wrong time.

That's what happened to a would-be burglar who reportedly tried to open a car door Thursday outside a condo complex.

The car was an unmarked Gulfport police cruiser.

And there was a police officer inside.

Police said Kelvin George Neal, 20, tried to open the door of the 2012 Dodge Charger about 12:45 a.m. Friday at Town Shores of Gulfport, 5940 30th Ave. S.

Detective Sgt. Thomas Woodman was in the vehicle, conducting surveillance on theft suspects who live in the complex.

Woodman also saw Neal try to enter a second vehicle, police said.

After being read his rights, Neal said he was "checking cars" for loose change, police said.

Neal was charged with two counts of burglary of an occupied conveyance and one count of possession of marijuana. Bail was set at $10,150.
