Durant HS football player killed in apparent drug-related shooting

Grover Wills, who was on the cusp of graduation, also played for the school's basketball team.

PLANT CITY, Fla. -- A Durant High School football player was killed Sunday in what investigators believe was a drug-related shooting.

Grover Wills, who was on the cusp of graduation, was shot and killed at the Mobil Gas Station, 612 W. Lumsden Rd., Brandon, at about 7:50 p.m., the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

"When Wills arrived, he got out of the vehicle and met with another adult male," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "A fight broke out between the two men and Wills was shot. Wills ran back to his car and his associate drove him to a local hospital where he later died."

The person Wills fought with, whose name was not immediately released, was interviewed by detectives but no charges were filed as of Monday.

The team expressed its condolences Monday:

“With heavy Hearts, Last night, we lost not only a teammate but a brother,” the school’s football account tweeted. “Rest In Peace Grover Wills! Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. #5 #Cougars..Forever.”

A candlelit service will be held at the school on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Wills played corner back and free safety on the football team and also was on the basketball team, according to maxpreps.com.
