It’s Friday, so you know it’s that time of the week where we recognize a different school in Tampa Bay as 10News’ School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida. It’s when we spend the week on campus to showcase the great achievements of the students, faculty and staff. Every Friday we are live from the school campus beginning at 5:30 a.m. and don’t forget to watch at 6 p.m. as well to catch the highlights from earlier in the day.
We’re happy to announce that our school this week is Lakeland High School in Polk County. Congratulations Dreadnaughts! One of the teachers on campus, Cheryl Pierce has been teaching in the Polk County School District for 31 years, and for the last 16 she has been at Lakeland. This isn’t her first time on campus though, she is also an alum. She teaches honors and AP Chemistry and her students enjoy her classes because it’s more than just lectures and test prep. It’s interactive and the students spend a good amount of time in the lab with hands on learning experiences. Fun fact – she now teaches in a building named after her former chemistry teacher.
It’s not just all science at Lakeland, they also have several visual arts classes as well as an AP History class. Lakeland High School also has a unique partnership to Harrison School for the Arts which is right next door. All the students at Harrison attend their academics classes at Lakeland. With both schools, they have a joint student body of approximately 2200 students! It’s pretty easy to see why Lakeland High School is this week’s 10News’ School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida.
