It’s our favorite part of the week! Friday leads us into the weekend, but it’s also when we showcase our 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida. This week we spent time on the campus of Centennial Middle STEM Magnet School in Pasco County.
They’ve only in their second year as a STEM school, but their new focus is making a big impact in the classroom’ Not just in a lab or in science and math classrooms, but all classes.
Would you have found your middle school history class more interesting if virtual reality was included in your lesson? That’s just one example of technology being used here
Never been to Bali to see a Volcano? Well you can in the science class here.
Plus, the classrooms aren’t your typical desk and chairs either. Walking into many of them you’ll find unique or flexible seating like bean bags. It’s part of the #STEMLATIC way at Centennial Middle. The LATIC part stands for Learner-Active, Technology Infused Classroom.
In addition to flexible seating choices, students also have an active role in how they learn. They can choose to work individually or in a group in the classroom. In some, they will even have a list of activities to choose from depending on how they feel is the best method in which they learn. It’s all about having their students play a more active role in their education.
Recently, the school held a hack-a-thon where students worked in teams to develop and code apps. The winning teams will even have their apps available to the public in the Apple App store. It’s just one more reason why they’re our 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida.
They are a magnet school, so if you have a fifth, sixth or seventh grader interested in attending Centennial Middle STEM Magnet School in Pasco County, the application window for next year opens Monday, Dec. 4.
