UPDATE: The Jose Fernandez jersey has been returned to Alonso High School. Previously, the jersey went missing at a candlelight vigil that was held at the high school baseball diamond.
Hillsborough County Public Schools says a family saw a large envelope leaning up against a ticket booth at the high school. The envelope said "Jose's jersey." The family brought the envelope to the school with the jersey inside.
The school says it is grateful to have the jersey back.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY-- Jose Fernandez's original Alonso High School jersey went missing after a candlelight vigil at Braulio Alonso High School Wednesday night.
Hillsborough County Public Schools sent out a press release to media saying Fernandez's jersey was hanging in the dugout during the ceremony. As the coaches and school leaders were cleaning up after the vigil, they noticed the jersey was gone.
The school has filed a police report with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Coach Landy Faedo is pleading with whoever took the jersey, to return it.
The star pitcher for Alonso High who became a starter for the Miami Marlins died early Sunday in a boat crash off Miami Beach. He was 24.
Fernandez's funeral will be held Thursday but is not open to the public.
