ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Nearly 100 guns were collected at Tampa International Airport's security checkpoint so far this year, which is the most out of Florida's airports, the Transportation Safety Administration said Monday.

TPA, with 86 firearms seized as of Nov. 20, had more guns collected than Orlando International (81), Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (62), Miami International (42) and Jacksonville International (34).

Across Florida, 440 firearms were found in bags at airport checkpoints, an increase from 411 discovered last year.

Nationwide, 3,733 firearms were found by TSA agents at airports, an increase from 3,391 in 2016 and 2,653 in 2015.

Firearms can be transported in checked baggage as long as they're declared to the airline, in a proper carrying case and unloaded.

"TSA would like to remind passengers that it is important for them to thoroughly search their bags for any potential dangerous weapons or prohibited items before departing for the airport," the agency said in a statement.
