Joe Soueidan is a 19-year-old with epilepsy. He's had two major brain surgeries and takes several medications, but he still has seizures bad enough that he requires supervision 24 hours a day.
Dani is a Labrador retriever, training to be able to detect when Joe is about to seize. Joe's family needs to raise $12,000 by January in order to buy Dani so Joe might be able to go back to school and be more independent.
"If (Dani) is alerted in time that he's going to have a seizure he may be able to take his magnet and rub it over his vagus nerve stimulator, and actually use it to keep from going into a seizure," said Joe's mother Natalie Soueidan.
"I could be on my own, whether it's having a girlfriend or a friend over," said Joe.
A fundraiser in Joe's benefit is being held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pulse Salon and Spa, 3756 Truman Loop Suite 101 in Wesley Chapel. Fifty percent of proceeds will go to the Soueidan family.
Anyone wishing to help can schedule an appointment with the salon at (813) 428-6917 during that time.
