Hillsborough Co. firefighter remains in serious condition after falling out of fire truck

The firefighter was sitting in the front of the engine when he fell out, officials said.

TAMPA, Fla. - A Hillsborough County Fire Rescue firefighter remained in serious condition Wednesday after falling out of a fire truck Tuesday afternoon.

Steven Dowd, 46, was the right front passenger of an engine leaving Station 28 on Sun City Center Boulevard at about 5:30 p.m. when he fell out the truck and onto the roadway, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Dowd was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"As far as we know there was no criminal activity involved in this," Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokesperson Eric Seidel said Tuesday. "This was strictly an accident."
