One man injured in a series of crashes caused by a suspect fleeing from a traffic stop is in critical condition, Largo police said.
On Tuesday about 2:45 p.m., Largo police attempted tried to stop a Mercedes 250 near the area of 36th Street and Melody Lane by East Bay Drive. The driver, Shaquille O'Neal Clemons, 21, of Largo, fled east on East Bay and sideswiped two vehicles: a white car, breaking the side view mirror, and a school bus, causing minor damage. There were no children on the bus.
Officers immediately stopped pursuit. The Mercedes then fled south on Belcher Road, and in the area of Ulmerton Road it struck two other vehicles. Clemons then tried to flee on foot, but a Pinellas Park police officer in the area saw him and was able to apprehend him.
One of the victims of the Ulmerton crashes was taken to a local hospital, where he is in critical condition, police said.
Clemons has been charged with Driving While License Suspended-Revoked, Reckless Driving with Property Damage and Injury, and Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Property Damage and Injury. He has also been arrested for Fleeing and Eluding, Possession of Hydromorphone Hydrochloride, Possession of Marijuana, Fleeing and Eluding, and Violation of Probation for Aggravated Battery.
He is being held on $62,250 bail.
Additional charges are possible.
