Citrus deputies shoot, kill man who crashed into their vehicle in Hernando

Citrus County deputies shot and killed a man who crashed into one of their vehicles.

HERNANDO, Fla. – A man is dead after Citrus County deputies shot him after he crashed his vehicle into a patrol car in Hernando on Saturday.

According to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office. deputies got a call that Brian Batchelder, 28, of Hernando, was making threats to shoot someone at Xtreme Games, at the Apex at U.S. 41 and State Route 200.

Units found Batchelder's Kia Sedona on U.S. 41, but a traffic stop attempt failed and he sped down SR200. Because of the traffic and safety concerns, deputies broke off the chase.

Later, the Kia was seen speeding past the store, and he pointed a gun at deputies, the sheriff's office said. Deputies again tried to stop the vehicle, but failed.

The Kia sped through a red light, directly at deputies. The Kia slammed into a sheriff's vehicle, which was pushed into three other cars.

The vehicles were pushed into a deputy.

Deputies fired at the vehicle. They were able to get Batchelder out of the KIA, but he died a short time later.

The injured deputy was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The deputies who fired at the Kia will be placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation goes on.
