Decomposed skeletal remains found in a trash can have been identified as those of a missing 33-year-old man, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office said.

INVERNESS, Fla. - Decomposed skeletal remains found in a trash can have been identified as those of a missing 33-year-old man, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office said.

Ryan Michael McClellan was last heard from on Sept. 15.

His remains were found in a wooded lot off American Avocet Point on Nov. 25 after a Citrus County deputy spotted the large trash can, Sheriff Mike Prendergast said.

Investigators used dental records to confirm McClellan's identity, which was released to the public on Monday.

His death is being investigated as a homicide, Prendergast said.

Neighbors said the can was left in the lot following Hurricane Irma in September, the sheriff's office said.

Anyone with information regarding McClellan's death is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 352-726-1121 and ask for the on-call major crimes detective. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 888-ANY-TIPS or visit their website.
