It was 60 years ago this weekend when a young Fidel Castro was in Ybor City trying to raise money.

Castro was 29-years-old and spent five days in town.

He visited several landmarks including the Vicente Martinez Ybor Cigar Factory.

On November 27, 1955, Castro delivered a speech to a few hundred locals at Sociedad La Union Marti-Maceo on East Seventh Avenue.

Castro never returned to Tampa, but he gained valuable support throughout the next four years of his revolution to overthrow Fulgencio Batista and the Cuban government in 1959.
