Tampa Bay area lawmakers reconsidering vote on 'beach bill'

The law gives hotels, condos, and private residences more control over the beachfront they own, all the way to the high-tide line.

Two Tampa Bay area lawmakers who voted in support of limiting public access on Florida beaches are now reconsidering that vote.

Representative Wengay Newton and his colleague, Representative Joe Grueters say they don't want to take the bill away, but introduce new legislation guaranteeing public access to any beach that receives public funding for renourishment.

Newton explains that the bill "seemed innocent" at the time and had never heard it could limit beach access.

The law gives hotels, condos, and private residences more control over the beachfront they own, all the way to the high-tide line.

The bill is set to go into effect July 1.
