ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WTSP) – You went out and braved the crowds on Black Friday. You supported your local shops on Small Business Saturday. You stayed up late searching for deals online on Cyber Monday.
If you have any money left for “Giving Tuesday,” here are a few tips to make sure you get the most value for your donation.
BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF
Do you want to do the most good with your charitable donation, or do you want to get a warm fuzzy feeling inside because of your donation? Either reason is valid, but it’s important to figure that out before you start writing checks.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Not only do you want to make sure you’re donating to reputable organizations, you also want to know your donation is making a difference. There are some great resources online like GiveWell.org that have already done the research for you and tell you which charities give you more bang for your buck. Charity Navigator is another good website and it allows you to search local charities in your area.
CONSIDER LOCAL CHARITIES
They may not always be the most efficient with their money, but there’s a much better chance that your donation will go toward making a difference in your community.
FOCUS YOUR DONATIONS
It costs these non-profit organizations the same amount to process a small donation as it does a large one. So instead of donating a little bit to a bunch of charities, choose one or two and focus all your dollars on those.
