HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating a person being treated for gunshot wounds by a deputy in Riverview on Wednesday afternoon.

The deputy was not injured and the person shot, Guy Russell McDonald, 49, is in stable condition non-life threatening injuries.

According to Col. Donna Lusczynski, McDonald was knocking on doors and ringing doorbells in Beazer Homes The Reserve at Pradera, a development under construction in Riverview. He appeared to be carrying a firearm.

Deputies went to the scene, but the suspect had left. They were able to get a description of the suspect and his van.

Deputies located the van and approached it in their vehicle. Over their PA system they announced their presence and told the suspect to exit the van and drop any firearms, Lusczynski said.

She said the suspect got out of the van but refused to follow the command to drop his weapon. A deputy, fearing for his safety and the safety of others, fired, striking the suspect, Lusczynski said..

McDonald was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was treated and released. He was then arrested on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm and taken to Orient Road Jail.

There was a female passenger in the car. She was taken to a local hospital for reasons unrelated to the shooting, deputies said.

Lusczynski said McDonald is a sex offender and has criminal records in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Previous charges include sex assault, larceny, burglary and crimes against children.

The deputy, Deputy Mijail Sequeira, 31, has been with the department with April 2014 and has been placed on routine administrative leave.
