Soon pet stores in Hillsborough County will soon be banned from selling puppies and kittens.

Wednesday, the Hillsborough County Commission approved Commissioner Ken Hagan's idea to have the County Attorney's Office research what other cities and counties are doing to ban pet stores from selling cats and dogs.

One commissioners vote in the coming months, they could require pet stores to only be allowed to promote pet adoptions.

After hearing from more than a dozen supporters, commissioners voted to move forward on looking at a new rule change, joining St. Petersburg, Sarasota County and 50 other communities in Florida.

Commissioners if they approve the new rule, it will cut down on the number of animals euthanized at shelters and help shut down the more than 10,000 puppy mills across the U.S.
