TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. -- The man killed in a fiery, three-car crash at a busy Tampa-area intersection is identified as a Moffitt Cancer Center doctor.

Charles Canaan Williams Jr., 70, was found dead inside his car as firefighters put out the flames just after 7 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, near the intersection of Fowler and Gillette avenues, according to a Temple Terrace Police Department news release.

Williams worked more than 30 years as a lung cancer specialist.

"The Moffitt family is devastated by the loss of Dr. Charles Williams," said Alan List, president and CEO of Moffitt Cancer Center in a statement. "He has been part of our family since the cancer center opened its doors back in 1986 and through the years has fought courageously alongside countless numbers of patients going through their cancer journey.

"Our thoughts are with Dr. Williams’ family at this very difficult time."

Police say Williams was driving north on Gillette when he slid into a car that already crashed into another. Williams' car then caught fire.

A Tampa man in one of the cars that crashed was taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. A Melbourne, Florida, woman behind the wheel of another and her adult male passenger were not hurt.

The crash remains under investigation.
