TAMPA, Fla. (WTSP) – Officials in Hillsborough County are searching for the person responsible for shooting and killing a 28-year-old man early Thursday morning in Tampa.

It happened in the 1500 block of 143rd Avenue East near North 12th Street.

The victim has been identified as Michael Bethel.

Officials credited their ShotSpotter technology with helping them respond swiftly to the scene. "It gives us very rapid, immediate response. We actually got the ShotSpotter alert before we got the 911 call, so we already had deputies on their way here when we received the 911 call,” said Colonel Donna Lusczynski.

ShotSpotter uses sensors to detect gunfire, and immediately alerts deputies to respond. Lusczynski said the technology is particularly useful in areas that struggle with crime.

No suspect has been arrested in connection with Bethel's death.

Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest should contact authorities immediately.
