A man who led a fundraising event for a deputy who died of cancer was struck and killed by two vehicles at the event Saturday night, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

According to deputies, Christopher James Scigliano, 44, of Lithia, was struck on Lithia Pinecrest Road when he stepped out to direct traffic at the event, which was being held in a field on the east side of Lithia Pinecrest and River Ranch roads.

Scigliano was first hit by a northbound 2015 Chevrolet truck driven by Kevin Barry Hancock, 46, of Lithia. The impact sent him into the southbound lane, where he was struck by a Ford SUV driven by Steven A. Hall, 41, of Tampa.

The event was to benefit a scholarship in memory of Larry Morrell, a 25-year veteran of the Hillsborough sheriff's office. He died of cancer in June.

The incident remains under investigation.
