The first medical marijuana dispensary in Tampa Bay opened Thursday morning in Clearwater.

Trulieve is on U-S 19, just north of Sunset Point Road, at 24761 US Highway 19 North #630 in Clearwater. The company sells both high and low T-H-C medical cannabis. Trulieve also delivers.

You can't just walk in off the street and walk out with marijuana. The cannabis is only available to people listed on the Florida Department of Health's Compassionate Use Registry. To get on that list, you have to be seeing a doctor, and prove that you suffer from epilepsy, severe seizures, muscle spasms, cancer or that you are terminally ill.

The Clearwater dispensary offers several types of medical marijuana but only to people on a Florida Department of Health registry.

One woman Bonnie, who wasn’t comfortable providing her last name, was the first customer to pick up medical marijuana pills. She tells 10News she has dealt with skin cancer for years, and nothing has helped, “That’s why I am willing to give this a try. If it works, it is worth it. The controversy surrounding medical marijuana doesn’t bother me.”

Bonnie’s doctor, Kathy Anderson weighed in, "As a physician I feel it is my duty to ensure patients are given all the options available, so I am very pleased that medical cannabis is now an industry recognized course of treatment I can recommend for my appropriate patients," she explained, “I think Florida is doing it right with a strict policy for dispensing the medicinial marijuana.”

Trulieve opened its first location last month in Tallahassee.
