An Avon Park man was killed when his pickup truck struck a train on Tuesday, according to the sheriff's office and Florida Highway Patrol.
Efrem Gibson, 54, died and four people on the train were injured in the incident at U.S. 98 and Cowhouse Road in Lorida.
According to troopers, the pickup was hauling a utility trailer eastbound on U.S. 98 toward the railroad crossing. The railroad arms were down.
FHP says for unknown reasons, Gibson tried to cross the tracks, and it struck the left side of the train.
The driver died at the scene.
The train was traveling from Miami to New York with 148 passengers and 10 crew members. One crew member and three passengers received minor injuries, but only the crew member was taken to a hospital.
U.S. 98 will be closed at the intersection for several hours as the investigation continues, officials warn. Alternate routes are recommended.
