ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A school bus driver cited a safety concern for letting 24 students off the bus some 10 blocks from Lealman Innovation Academy on Tuesday morning.

An earlier report indicated one student was unaccounted for -- all since have been found, according to authorities.

A chemical smell caused the Pinellas County bus driver to open the doors of the bus blocks before reaching Lealman Innovation Academy on 39th Avenue North, according to our partners at the Tampa Bay Times.

The incident happened around 7:35 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15.

In an email to 10News, Pinellas County schools spokesperson Lisa Wolf released the following statement:

“The bus incident this morning is concerning and will be fully investigated by the district. Pinellas County Schools has strict policies and expectations of safety in place for our bus drivers and this morning those policies were not followed. The bus driver will not be transporting any students in Pinellas County while an investigation is underway.”
