PLANT CITY, Fla. -- One man is dead after a shooting involving two Plant City police officers.
The shooting was reported around 5 a.m. Thursday at a BP gas station on Alsobrook Street. Plant City Police spokesperson Al Van Duyne said the man drove his vehicle at a "high-rate of speed" in an attempt to run an officer from the road.
The Plant City Police Department has identified the man as 35-year-old Jesus Cervantes. He was a Plant City resident.
Officers then deflated the vehicle's tires to try to get the man to stop. The vehicle crashed around Alsobrook Street and Park Road.
Van Duyne said officers then surrounded the vehicle, and instructed the driver to get out of the vehicle and show his hands.
The driver did not listen to the officers. He then made an attempt to go into the driver's side rear door to retrieve "an unknown object," according to Van Duyne.
Van Duyne said the officers "feared for their life" before they fired shots at the driver. Cervantes was killed in the shooting.
The police officers were not injured, Van Duyne said.
The officers are placed on routine administrative leave, according to Plant City police.
