ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Catholic community in St. Petersburg will have a new bishop as Pope Francis appointed Bishop Gregory L. Parkes to the seat.

Parkes, former Bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee, takes over for retiring Bishop Robert N. Lynch, who has served since 1996.

Lynch released a statement about the new bishop Monday and said that he was "filled with joy that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Parkes as the new Bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg."

A press conference is scheduled for Monday at 10:30 a.m. You can watch it online, on the Facebook page or listen to it over the radio at Spirit FM 90.5.
