SARASOTA, Fla. -- Thomas White, a man who's been arrested 24 times in Sarasota County, once again is sitting behind bars.

This time, the 31-year-old is accused of stealing a truck as a 9-year-old girl jumped out of its backseat, according to a Sarasota Sheriff's Office news release.

Deputies say the incident happened around 5 p.m. Saturday at a Lowe's parking lot on Fruitville Road. While a man was loading mulch into the truck's bed, White jumped into the driver's seat and hit the gas.

The victim's daughter jumped out in time.

Pursuing deputies spotted the truck around Cattlemen and Bee Ridge roads and tried to stop him. Eventually, White ran out of the truck at a nearby restaurant and was arrested.

White's prior crimes include aggravated battery, burglary and dealing in stolen property. He last was released from prison in October 2016 after being sentenced to more than 10 felony charges.

He's now in jail on two counts of resisting an officer, carjacking, burglary, kidnapping and vehicle theft.

Additional charges are likely, authorities say.
