SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. -- A 13-year-old Guatemalan girl was impregnated by a 26-year-old man she told a detective was her boyfriend.

That man is now under arrest, Diego Vasquez-Vasquez, of Sarasota, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

Vasquez-Vasquez was charged Thursday with lewd and lascivious battery and child abuse resulting in the impregnation of a child.

A Florida Department of Children and Families employee referred the teen's case to SCSO on November 2. The girl was interviewed along with her family and she admitted to having sex with Vasquez-Vasquez and that he is the father of their unborn child.

SCSO reported that the teen attempted to conceal her pregnancy during the interview, but she later admitted that she and Vasquez-Vasquez were "boyfriend and girlfriend" and "in love," according to the report. She also said that her family was aware of their relationship.

The girl told the detective that she had been living in the United States for about a year and stopped going to school because she did not like it. She was staying at home taking care of other children in the household, according to a statement given by another family member.

The other witness confirmed the girl's account and said they were aware of the girl's relationship with Vasquez-Vasquez. They added that the girl was left alone with the suspect for periods of time and that she normally spent time with him alone in a bedroom.

Vasquez-Vasquez was cooperative with deputies and agreed to speak about his relationship with the girl.
