Bartow, Fla. -- A former Polk County teacher convicted of having sex with three students lost her bid for a reduced sentence on Tuesday, according to the Ledger.

Jennifer Fichter, 31, now faces serving a 22-year prison sentence after Circuit Judge Glenn Shelby rejected her argument.

New defense testimony cited low self-esteem, depression and an unfulfilled desire to please her parents for driving Fichter, an English teacher, to seek relationships with her students at Central Florida Aerospace Academy in Lakeland, an extension program at Kathleen High School.

But in the end, he stood by the sentence he’d imposed in July 2015 after Fichter, 31, pleaded to 37 child sex charges.

“The court announced at the original sentencing,” Shelby said, “the fact that the defendant was a teacher, these were students and the particular crimes that were pled to show a violation of that trust that we, as a society, place in our teachers. That couldn’t be ignored then and so, is part of the original sentencing.”
