POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- A mother of two was shot and killed by her estranged boyfriend, who later turned the gun onto himself, Winter Haven Police reported Saturday.

Mayline Valle Cardona, 37, was shot multiple times by Jose Hernandez-Acevedo, 51, of Winter Haven, at the Villa of Lake Smart located at 4019 Vista Del Lago Drive shortly before 9:15 p.m. Friday.

Police said that Hernandez-Acevedo shot at Cardona over 30 times with an undetermined amount of bullets striking Cardona's head and body. Numerous casings recovered at the scene showed that the suspect reloaded his weapon to continue shooting Cardona.

Prior to the shooting, Hernandez-Acevedo was seen by witnesses talking to one of Cardona's children at her residence, placing a phone call then running to the main office. 10 minutes later Cardona arrived at her apartment and parked her vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the suspect ran up to her and began shooting.

Witnesses then saw the man standing over Cardona's body while she was prone on the ground. He then fled the area in a silver vehicle.

WHPD officers located Hernandez-Acevedo later at the Lake Fannie boat ramp dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Cardona's two children, ages 12 and 13, were released to family members at the scene. The shooting death remains under investigation.
