It’s being touted as a way to get around that dreaded beach traffic…and the view isn’t so bad either.

Today kicked off Madeira Beach’s new ferry and water taxi service. This new wave of transportation takes you to nine different stops throughout Madeira, St. Petersburg, and Treasure Island.

The partnership between the city, Pinellas County and local businesses has been in the works for years. Now, they say this will help beachgoers get around faster and avoid parking congestion.

“The ferry is taking cars off the roads," said Ferry Captain Mark Hubbard. "It is a great way to travel on the intercostal waterway. 'Transpertainment' you can call it. What a sexy way to travel.”

The service was free all day.

It’ll start running Fridays and Saturdays and then go to five days a week beginning in March.
