PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The mystery over what caused the sonic booms heard across Tampa Bay Saturday might be solved.

A representative from NORAD told the Tampa Bay Times that F-15 fighter jets were on patrol to protect President Trump during his visit to Pensacola Saturday.

The jets belong to the Louisiana Air National Guard. According to NORAD spokesperson John Cornilio, they weren’t responding to any incidents at the time.

Cornilio said the booms were likely a result of allowing the F-15s to hit supersonic speed that day.

"It seems to make sense to me that what people heard could be connected to our decision to give authorization for the F-15s to go supersonic," Cornelio said.
