JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There's a new bill in the Florida Legislature that would allow felons to vote and own guns.

Current Florida law does not allow felons to own guns or vote unless the felon is pardoned.

House Bill 903 which was filed by State Rep. Cord Byrd would allow circuit and county judges the option to reinstate a felon's rights if the felon has served their time and paid related fines for the crime.

Felons would be allowed to petition the court once a year.

"Over 22,000 applications are pending, with only a few hundred being processed each year. Clearly, the system is broken," wrote Byrd.
