Sarasota cop shoots self at North Port community center

NORTH PORT, Fla. - An off-duty Sarasota police officer shot himself while at a community center, the department said.

The 25-year-old officer, whose identity was not released, was injured in "what appears to be an accidental self-inflicted shooting" at the Morgan Family Community Center on West Price Boulevard at about 6:30 p.m., the department said.

The officer, who was not in uniform, was taken to a hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, the department said.

"Officers with the Sarasota Police Department are working with the North Port Police Department to investigate this shooting," Sarasota police said. "There will be an in-depth review of this incident to ensure all policies and procedures were followed."
