Up to Speed: Safety improvements planned for 4th Street

Transportation leaders say they’re seeing more severe crashes on 4th street in St. Pete. It's why a safety project is underway to fix it.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — 4th Street North in St. Pete is home to many local restaurants and community staples. It's also an alternate route to Interstate 275. The corridor is one of several projects The Florida Department of Transportation has plans for safety improvements.

The corridor is known for being the site of hundreds of crashes — the reason why everyone from businesses to homeowners has asked local city leaders for changes. With that in mind, median modifications are planned for 30th Avenue N. to 94th Avenue N.

Proposed upgrades for the stretch of 4th Street include adding new crosswalks with signals, extending left turn lanes, converting medians to directional median openings and closing other median openings to improve the flow of traffic.

Pedestrian improvements are already underway between 5th Avenue N. to 5th Avenue S, including crosswalks with a new type of signal.

Instead of the flashing beacons you see at some crosswalks now, signals on the crosswalks will be similar to traffic lights showing green, yellow and red.

The 45 mph-speed limit will stay the same under the project which has a total design cost for the project is an estimated $632,000.
