MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. -- After a gorgeous day on Madeira Beach, fans pack into the Daiquiri Deck Ocean Side Bar & Grill on Gulf Boulevard. It's a restaurant known for its fresh seafood and wings.

"They're fabulous. They're excellent. The hot and spicy are very good," said Joy Greene, who enjoys the restaurant's atmosphere, live music, and outdoor seating.

But Daiquiri Deck also reeled in a disappointing 24 health safety violations on its February 1st state inspection by the Division of Hotels and Restaurants.

Among the problems were:

  • Cheese and coffee cream stored at temperatures considered too warm
  • Live roaches, too many to count according to the inspector, found on a prep table
  • Roaches in a case of taco shells
  • Live flies in the bar area
  • Rodent droppings discovered in a case of powdered mashed potatoes

"We had a couple series of events that occurred at the exact same time," said assistant manager Dave Whimpey.

Management blamed the issues on some old boxes of financial records brought down from the attic to be shredded. They say that's how the roaches got in the kitchen and that everything has since been cleaned up and corrected.

They had no problem allowing our camera behind the kitchen door, where we found the kitchen clean and tidy, the chef washing her hands and using gloves, and the dairy products now stored in a colder cooler.

"There were changes made immediately," said Whimpey.

But what about the roaches in the taco shells? Management says those items were old and not to be sold. The same goes for the mashed potato mix with rodent droppings.

"Once again, something that's been around for years but is not on our menu. Those were old items that weren't in use," said Whimpey.

Despite the previous problems, on our inspection we gave Daiquiri Deck an "A-OK" with impressive improvement behind the kitchen door.
