(CNN.com) - When Amanda Bynes was placed under involuntary psychiatric hold last year, many onlookers tried to guess what she was receiving treatment for.
But now that she's an outpatient living with her parents and attending school at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, the former child star is setting the record straight on her diagnosis.
Her attorney, Tamar Arminak, tells People magazine that Bynes asked her to "dispel certain rumors" about her mental health. "For the record, Amanda does not have schizophrenia, nor has she ever been diagnosed with it."
Arminak, who acknowledges the frequent speculation about Bynes' state, explains that the 28-year-old star "has remained silent because she believed it was best to keep her mental health diagnosis private."
Bynes hasn't been as hesitant to show how far she's come since last July, when she was detained for a mental health evaluation following her involvement in a residential disturbance. On Twitter, she's shared cheerful photos of herself with her family members, and on vacation in Los Cabos, Mexico.
The actress has been in her parents' custody since December, and splits her focus between her ongoing treatment and studying at FIDM.
"Her family is closely involved with her day-to-day life but they try to give her as much autonomy as possible," Arminak tells People. "She's doing extremely well. ... Amanda is very happy studying fashion and she hopes to one day design her own line."
