Grease is the word and the word is more morbid than audiences thought.
At least according to a recently unearthed fan theory that suggests Sandy Olsson, the straight-laced romantic lead of the classic 1978 musical, is actually dead.
Reddit user Atomicbolt initially presented this theory, pointing to the final scene in the film — during which Sandy and greaser gang leader Danny Zuko fly off into the sunset in a red convertible — and asking, "How did the car fly?"
According to the theory, the answer lies in the couple's first encounter at the start of the film. Danny and Sandy are said to have met after Danny saved Sandy from nearly drowning, but Atomicbolt reasons that Sandy "actually did drown on the beach that day."
"As she drowned, her brain (was) deprived of oxygen (and) she had a vivid coma fantasy involving her summer fling Danny, where they shared a magical year of high school together," the user writes. "The visions get increasingly outlandish as time passes until finally, as Danny desperately tries to resuscitate her on the beach, she sees herself flying into heaven in her dying moments. The entire movie was a drowning woman's coma fantasy."
Atomicbolt first shared the conspiracy theory back in 2013. The post has since resurfaced, setting the Internet ablaze and grabbing the attention of everyone from stars like Sarah Michelle Gellar to the staff over at the Today show. Thankfully, some fans were around to promptly douse it with reason
Just read a theory that #Grease is really the dying vision of a drowning Danny and/or Sandy. WHY YALL SO DOWN ON ANYTHING JOYFUL IN LIFE?— Bay Alden (@BayAlden) September 8, 2016
No because Sandy is alive in Grease 2 https://t.co/fVHGA26i5n— ✨Princess Carly✨ (@Princess_Carly7) September 8, 2016
I can reluctantly understand the dead Sandy in Grease theory. But now I need someone to explain Grease 2.— Italia Ricci (@italiaricci) September 8, 2016
