(USA Today) In an eleventh-hour move, CBS has renewed The Mentalist for a seventh season, but cancelled five other underperforming series: Dramas Hostages and Intelligence, Robin Williams comedy The Crazy Ones, and spring sitcoms Bad Teacher and Friends with Better Lives.
The Mentalist, starring Simon Baker as a fake clairvoyant detective, was given a dim chance of returning. The show had wrapped up its Red John story line, contracts were expiring, the show already had more than enough episodes for syndication and producer Warner Bros. Television began shopping the series to other networks including NBC. Voters in USA TODAY's Save Our Shows picked it as their favorite show among those likely to be cancelled for rescue.
In its favor was CBS's unwillingness to schedule new series on Sunday nights in the fall due to NFL football overruns, which delay the start of its primetime lineup. But it's unclear whether the show will remain in that 10 p.m. ET/PT slot; the network will announce its schedule May 14.
