Lakeland deputy secures housing for homeless, disabled woman

POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- A distressed woman called the Lakeland Police Dept. on Oct. 10, 2016. She was stranded without a ride after being discharged from the Bartow Regional Medical Center.

She told Lakeland Police that she was homeless and disabled with no money or ability to care for herself.

Officer Hammersla responded to the call by calling a medical transport service to bring her to the police station to collect her personal belongings. He also secured a place for her to stay at Talbot House Ministries after recharging her electrical scooter at the station. He ensured that she would receive social security the next morning.

After realizing that her scooter would not fit in his patrol car, Hammersla walked several blocks with her with a flashlight to guide her to her new home.
