Bear tranquilized near FSU campus

Florida wildlife officials removed a black bear roaming just blocks from Doak Campbell Stadium Wednesday morning, according to a report in the Tallahassee Democrat.

The bear was sighted near Lovelace and Pensacola drives, was tranquilized and is being relocated. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said the bear was likely looking for food to stock up for winter.

“In fall, bears require around 20,000 calories a day in order to prepare for winter,” said FWC spokeswoman Susan Smith in a statement. “This bear is likely searching for food.”

FWC officials this summer signed a memorandum with Waste Pro to make bear-resistant trash cans more accessible in North Florida.
