(Democrat and Chronicle) They called him "Pervert Dave."
Not as in, "Dave's a pervert." He was just "Pervert Dave." That's a big distinction.
His real name was David W. Cummings, a Rochester native and Air Force veteran, and he died this week in Florida at age 65 leaving behind adoring friends and relatives and, for now, a mystery as to the origin of his unusual nickname.
Within hours of the publication of a
that referred to him as "Pervert Dave," photos of the former biker and animal lover went viral onlinein posts that asked the obvious: How does one come by such a moniker?
Karen Baker, whom the death notice listed as his sister, said in a telephone interview she had no idea how Cummings came to be known as "Pervert," but figured he got it from his motorcycle pals.
She acknowledged that she wasn't his real sister, but rather a kid sister in the metaphorical sense, having met him when she was a teenager while riding with other motorcycle enthusiasts.
"He was always, 'Pervert,'" said Baker, 56, of Crystal River, Fla. "He's had the nickname for 40 years or better. I've known him for over 40 years myself and he's always been my big brother and everybody just knew him as 'Pervert.'"
Baker said she never asked the obvious. She loved him, just as he was – long hair, bearded, leather vest and all.
"You know how people get nicknames?" she asked. "Well, he got 'Pervert.'"
Cummings was born Sept. 28, 1949, to Charles and Helen Cummings in Rochester. He died April 13 in his sleep at Baker's home in Crystal River.
He left behind a brother, Keith Cummings, and relatives in Florida and upstate New York, Baker said.
Baker said she believed Cummings left the Rochester area in the early 1970s. She said he worked as a mechanic for a while, then as a real estate appraiser after meeting his late wife, Morgan, who died in 2004.
They raised Paso Fino horses together and rode motorcycles.
His death notice asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Cummings's name to the ASPCA or other animal welfare organization.
"He was just one of those guys that everybody loved," Baker said, her dogs yowling in the background. "You could be in the bar and he would be the one sitting there telling the jokes. I'm serious. He'd have everybody rolling on the floor laughing."
That was Pervert Dave.
