Tampa, Florida - Memorial Day is a day to honor service members and their families for sacrifices they make, but for Paul Swindle and his team at Mortgage Contracting Services, they feel that tradition has been lost.
"A lot of think of Memorial Day as picnics, barbecues and another day that we get off," said Paul.
That's why they decided to take charge and raise awareness of this special day. Paul said they wanted to give their employees the opportunity to participate in an event for a worthwhile cause. After their company in Dallas, Texas sponsored a Memorial Day event in 2011, they decided to "Carry The Load" in Tampa Bay.
Although Paul isn't a veteran himself, he and his company are determined to bring back the true meaning of Memorial Day in Tampa Bay, by having others Carry the Load at this year's event at Al Lopez Park.
"Two Navy Seals who wanted to bring back the true meaning of Memorial Day, so they started this event in Dallas, which is a 20-hour walk and last year we approached them and asked if we could participate and host a satellite event," said Paul.
Last year's event was a success in Tampa, raising $5,000 for local charities. This year the march will take place on May 27, but will be only a two hour walk.
Paul said it's great that they are able to raise money and it stays here in Tampa Bay to benefit local military, police and firefighter organizations.
