NORTH PORT, Fla. - A missing Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office K-9 found dead Monday morning died from injuries "consistent with being hit by a vehicle," North Port police said.

The K-9 named Edo escaped from its kennel at some point Friday. It isn't known how Edo escaped.

“We are overwhelmed by the support we have received from the community while searching for K9 Edo, both in North Port and Charlotte County,” said Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell in a Facebook post. “This was not the outcome we had hoped for, and our thoughts and prayers are with the handler and his family at this time.”

Edo was missing from his latched kennel in his handler's garage on Friday, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said the garage door was open because of the cooler weather.

Edo served the Charlotte County's Sheriff's Office for two years.

The sheriff’s office said more than a dozen volunteers tried to find Edo.

The North Port Police Department is continuing its investigation.
