WINTER HAVEN -- A German shepherd puppy was saved by Polk County firefighters from a house fire on Tuesday.

Polk Fire Rescue crews were called to 205 Westwood Ave. NW about 2:09 p.m., where a house was on fire.

When crews arrived, they found a home that was about 50 percent involved and a neighboring home, at 3680 Westwood Ave. was in danger of the flames and heat. No one was at either residence.

The house at 205 Westwood Ave. was already destroyed by the time crews arrived, but they were able to safe the other home.

Polk County firefighters rescued a German shepherd puppy from a fire.

During a search of the second home for victims, Capt. Clay Hamric, Engineer Chris Lowe and Firefighter Ryan Reed found the puppy and saved it from the fire.

The owners of the properties were still being determined. The cause of the fire is not known and will be forwarded to the State Fire Marshal's Office.

Red Cross also has been notified to provide assistance to those living in the homes.
