GREENSBORO, NC -- A rare earthquake shook the ground not far from Roanoke, Virginia Wednesday afternoon. The quake struck near the small town of Pearisburg, Virginia, along the West Virginia border.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake measured a 3.1 magnitude on the Richter Scale. It happened at 1:33pm 8 miles north of Pearisburg. Many in the area reported feeling the ground shake, and even reported hearing sounds.

Weak earthquakes happen from time to time in the Blue Ridge Mountains. A 3.1 magnitude is typically large enough to be felt by many, but is not typically large enough to cause significant damage.
