Sculley’s shut down for second time in 8 months

Health inspectors found temperature violations on the cheese, lettuce and cooked rice - along with live roaches.

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — On an unseasonably warm February evening, customers sit along the John’s Pass boardwalk enjoying fresh grouper and drinks at Sculley’s Waterfront Restaurant.

The establishment is popular with locals and tourists alike.

“Our food was delicious, and we had a good time,” said Elizabeth Anebski, visiting with her husband, John, from Cincinnati.

The couple had no idea the waterfront restaurant was shut down as an emergency closure by state health inspectors last week.

An inspector found 14 violations during the restaurant's February 8th inspection, including a dish machine not sanitizing properly, temperature violations on the cheese, lettuce and cooked rice, along with live roaches.

The inspector reported finding six roaches between two coolers on the cook line and another crawling across the bread cart.

Records show this was the restaurant’s second emergency closure in eight months. The restaurant was also shut down in June 2017.

“I can tell you the issues were fixed quite quickly,” said Sculley’s Director of Operations Louis Hatzipetrakos. “The violations from back in June were separate from the violations they found this time. The ones that happened back in June caused us to close for about a week. That didn’t happen this time, so obviously there’s nothing to worry about there.”

But 10Investigates found nearly identical problems with temperature violations and live roaches showing up on the June inspection as well. The inspector reported finding 70 roaches in a wooden cabinet at the server’s station and six inside the soap dispensers in the dish area.

“It is a concern but hopefully they’re going to correct their mistakes,” Anebski said. “We didn’t see any [roaches] tonight… which is good.”

Sculley’s was cleared to reopen a day after their emergency closure with zero remaining violations.

The restaurant has invited 10News back in the future for a scheduled inspection of their kitchen.
