Lightning, county in talks to keep team in city till 2037

Amalie Arena will host the 1st and 2nd Round of the NCAA Div. I Men's Basketball Tournament on March 19-22, 2020.

Good news, Tampa Bay Lightning fans. The team is likely to stay put for at least two decades.

Our news partners at The Tampa Bay Times are reporting Hillsborough County officials and the team are close to exercise two five-year options to extend the current lease, which is scheduled to expire in 2027.

The county will in turn commit $61 million over the next two decades to maintain and upgrade Amalie Arena. The money will come from the Tourist Development Tax, which is assessed on each night's stay in a hotel or motel.

The sides are expected to have a deal in place by January.
