Tampa Bay has a new professional sports team

The Tampa Bay Cannons are among 23 teams in the American Ultimate Disc League.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Cannons, a professional Frisbee team that plays in the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL), now call St. Petersburg home.

The team got its start in Jacksonville in 2015. Player, coach and part owner, Brandon Perales said they decided to move to Tampa Bay to increase viewership.

“We feel there is a lot of potential in the area to reach a brand new audience and have a much more sustainable franchise,” Perales said.

Ultimate Frisbee, or ultimate disc, is an exciting game known for its athletic plays. The premise of the sport is to pass the Frisbee down the field, and complete a pass in the opposing teams end zone to score a point. When in possession of the Frisbee you cannot run, you can only pivot. The only way to move the Frisbee down the field is by passing it.

The Frisbee changes possession if it is dropped, thrown out of bounds or intercepted.

“So you think of an outfielder in baseball making an amazing diving catch, you have those in ultimate” Perales said. “There’s just some amazing plays that can be had, to catch the disc, maintain possession of the disc or take away possession of the disc as well.”

The AUDL consists of 23 teams across North America. The Cannons play in the South Division. They open their season up on the road against the Raleigh Flyers on March 31. Their home opener is April 7, against the Atlanta Hustle. Fans can purchase tickets online.
